Exposing 5 Roadside Myths

Each year, leading roadside providers conduct a benchmark study to get a clearer picture of how drivers perceive and use roadside assistance—and to track the evolving needs of motorists nationwide.

In the 2023 study, which surveyed over 2,500 drivers, a key challenge was identified: Many drivers are misinformed about what roadside assistance actually covers. These misconceptions can prevent people from using services they’re already paying for, leading to unnecessary expenses in time, money, and stress.

In fact, even though 85% of respondents had a roadside assistance program, only 18% actually used it during an incident.

Let’s break down the top five myths about roadside assistance—and how believing them may be costing you more than the coverage itself.

1. I probably won’t have a roadside event.

Think roadside issues are rare? Think again. According to the survey, 55% of drivers experienced at least one roadside event in the past year. That means 1 in 2 drivers will need assistance annually. So it’s not a question of if it will happen, but when. And if you drive an electric vehicle (EV), your chances are even higher. EVs are generally heavier and built with thinner tire treads to maximize range—causing tires to wear out faster.

Combine that with the fact that most EVs don’t come with spare tires (to reduce weight), and the result is a 25% higher need for tows compared to gas-powered vehicles.

The takeaway: Don’t wait until you’re stranded. Check your motor club membership to confirm whether roadside assistance is included. If it’s not, adding it is typically very affordable—often less than a cup of coffee per month. Paying out of pocket for a single tow or lockout can easily exceed the annual cost of coverage.

2. Roadside assistance only applies if I’m on the side of the road.

The term “roadside” can be misleading. While many assume coverage only applies on highways or road shoulders, just 32% of events actually happen there. In reality, 42% of incidents occur at home, and 26% in public parking lots.

Unfortunately, many drivers don’t realize their coverage applies in these situations. The study found that:

  • 34% of drivers didn’t think they were covered in parking lots.
  • 48% didn’t think they were covered at home.

This confusion leads to people unnecessarily hiring locksmiths, tow trucks, or jump-start services—even when those are already included in their roadside program.

The takeaway: Understanding your coverage in advance can help you avoid unnecessary expenses and make sure you get the help you’re entitled to, no matter where your car trouble strikes.

3. It’s faster if I fix the problem myself.

It’s easy to assume that waiting for professional help will take too long, especially if you’ve heard horror stories from friends or family. But while occasional delays do happen, drivers are unaware that they’re the exception—not the rule.

As a result, only about half of drivers in roadside situations call for professional help. The other half either try to fix the issue themselves or call a friend or family member, thinking it’ll be faster. But this DIY approach can be dangerous—especially on busy roads or in bad weather.

The takeaway: Trained service providers follow strict safety protocols and know how to handle high-risk environments. Even if you’re confident in your mechanical skills, letting the professionals take over is the fastest, safest, and most reliable way to get back on the road.

4. Roadside assistance is too expensive.

Another common myth is that using roadside services will rack up additional out-of-pocket costs. In reality, if your issue falls within your coverage limits (which most events do), there’s no extra charge.

Yet many people still avoid calling for help, opting to fix it themselves or enlisting the help of a friend—believing they’re saving money. The truth is, DIY fixes can end up costing more in the long run, especially if a mistake leads to further damage.

Most roadside programs cover:

  • Flat tire replacement
  • Fuel delivery
  • Lockouts (including at home!)
  • Jump starts
  • Winching
  • Limited towing

The takeaway: It’s crucial to read the fine print so you understand what’s included—and where limitations (like towing distance) might apply. In most cases, using your coverage is not only safer, but also the most affordable option. And if roadside isn’t currently included in your membership, adding it usually costs far less than a single unexpected tow or lockout.

5. Using roadside assistance will affect my membership costs.

Many drivers shy away from using their roadside benefits out of fear it will count as a claim and increase their membership fees. While 14% of drivers cited this concern, most motor clubs don’t treat roadside usage as a claim.
That said, some clubs do place limits on how often you can use roadside services within a given time period. This is designed to prevent overuse; not penalize occasional users.

To avoid any surprises, take a few minutes to contact your motor club. Ask whether your roadside benefits count toward your claims history and if any usage limits apply. Being informed allows you to make confident, cost-effective decisions when you need help most.

Roadside events happen—whether it’s a dead battery, a lockout, or a flat tire. And with 55% of drivers facing one each year, it pays to be prepared.

Unfortunately, the misconceptions surrounding roadside assistance are keeping many drivers from getting the help they need. In reality, roadside coverage is often the fastest, easiest, safest, and most affordable way to resolve unexpected vehicle issues.

Being proactive now can save you time, money, and stress later—and help you get back on the road with confidence.
